Medical Detection Dogs trains dogs to detect the odour of disease. Our research includes cancer, Parkinson's and other diseases and could save millions of lives by improving diagnostics. We already help people manage complex, life-threatening medical conditions by training Medical Alert Dogs.

Story

Those of you who already know me, will know I am mad about dogs. For several years now, I've been involved with rescue dogs and (more recently) with Guide Dogs. Over that time I've come across many incredible dogs and seen some of the wonderful things they do for humans. I genuinely did not think I could be any more impressed - with the things dogs can do - but I am!!!!!

Medical Detection Dogs train dogs for both CANCER detection & MEDICAL ALERT / ASSISTANCE.

At their centre, I was completely in awe; watching the dogs correctly indicate samples from patients with bladder cancer and others alerting their owners to small changes in blood sugar levels.

Medical Detection Dogs is a charity working towards a non-invasive way to use a 'chemical signature' to identify cancers, in the hope that one day a machine can provide this early detection. They receive no NHS, or government funding.

They also provide bio-detection dogs (medical alert dogs) such as Addison's Alert dog Coco; who was given up by owners who could not cope with him. Now Coco provides a life-saving and life changing function for his owner, Karen, by letting her know when she needs medication (even if that means waking her up in the middle of the night).

Not only does Coco provide this vital function, but he has reduced the number of emergency visits Karen needs - to hospital - and he gives her the confidence to be more outgoing & independent. As if that is not special enough, Coco has also been a blood donor for his best friends, Caesar. He sadly passed away this year (www.justgiving.com/caesar), but despite the trauma of losing his friend and giving blood to save him, Coco was alerting Karen and keeping her safe throughout.Truly Amazing.

You can give anything from £3 upwards and every penny will go towards something very special. THANK YOU X
