Budapest to Bamako Rally: The Great African Run · 6 January 2009

When the sun goes down the working day ends for millions of people without electricity. At the flick of a switch, lives can be instantly changed with a solar light. SolarAid wants to make real, sustainable change happen.

Story

As most of you know, we leave this week to embark on our European/African adventure – driving 8,314 kms through 9 countries in just 15 days!

The Budapest to Bamako rally is the world’s largest charity rally.  It’s a tough and demanding driving adventure, but most importantly, participants deliver direct aid to some of the poorest villages in Africa.  We’re supporting a village in a remote region of Mali .  Our village has no electricity, so we hope to improve their lives by helping them leverage the most abundant, sustainable and cost free resource they have – the sun.

We’ll be delivering and setting up a solar lighting system in our quest against nights!  Night time currently means downing tools or using toxic kerosene lamps.  Over 1.5 million people die each year from respiratory diseases caused by toxic smoke from lamps and cooking fires.  We’ll also be taking solar cookers to provide a safer and more sustainable means of cooking.

Many of you have asked how you can support us on this epic journey.  We’re raising money for ‘Solar Aid’ whose work will take power to more than just the villages we can help on this trip.  Any donations would be much appreciated for this great cause.  Many thanks!

The Green Knights Chris & Rob!

P.S.  Yes - we are taking the suits for the rally!
