72-hour cycle relay Lands End to John O'Groats, 10 April 2012
Participants: 72-hour cycle relay Lands End to John O'Groats
We raise funds for Cambridge Vet School to provide the best in animal healthcare

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In July 2012 I'm cycling with my uncle Dug from Land's End to John O'Groats. During the 72-hour relay we want to raise as much money as we can for our chosen charities, The University of Cambridge Veterinary School Trust and Go Commando. We believe that this challenge has never been attempted before!

For a number of years I have been involved in fundraising for The University of Cambridge Veterinary School Trust as part of The Solent District Dog Display Team and Training Club, who have raised a staggering £145,000 for the charity since 1983. This money has helped to fund equipment and facilities at The University of Cambridge Veterinary School's referral hospital which not only treats thousands of animal patients from all over the UK each year, but helps train the veterinary surgeons and specialists of the future.

Although I am taking a break from the Display Team this year due to other commitments - namely my GCSEs - I wanted to continue fundraising for the Trust and, as I have always had an ambition to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats, thought this was the perfect way to do it!

In 2009 I cycled 100-miles for the Trust and in 2010 300-miles, so this will be even more of a challenge! I've had great support from the New Forest Cycling Club, and my fellow members have been incredibly generous with their time - providing advice and coaching me for the ride.

I'm really pleased that my uncle Dug is joining me in this challenge and raising money for his own charity, Go Commando, which supports Royal Marines and their families. A Royal Marine himself, uncle Dug is making sure that we don't slack on the training!

Please support me in my ride and in doing so support Cambridge Veterinary School and their aim in providing the best animal healthcare, now and in the future. Your gift, no matter how large or small, will make a huge difference to their work.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charities.

So please dig deep and donate now.

6th July: Update with one day to go before the ride starts.

Update - 12th July 2012

Well we completed the ride in 69 hours and 23 minutes with no damage to the bikes whatsoever and minimal injuries but no accidents! It was the hardest thing I have ever done. The nights were tough and some of the night hill climbs were gruelling, particularly a seven mile one through the Lake District at 2.00 in the morning!

It rained for most of the time too, but I had lots of changes of clothes and the cooker in our support motor home came in very handy as a drier!!

I did have one fantastic ride around a Loch in Scotland, near the end of the ride........and the sun shone the whole time! This stretch also had quite a bit of downhill in it as well which was a huge relief and great for getting up some real speed!

I also got to cycle across the Severn Bridge completely on my own as it had been closed for road repairs, so I cycled on the pathway. Unfortunately it was very foggy, so I didn't get to see much scenery.

I'd like to thank Go-Commando for getting us some really tasty rations for the ride, which were really quick to prepare, so allowed me to get as much sleep as I could between rides (usually around an hour).

I've attached some of the photos of the ride. Thank you so much to everybody who has supported me and raised money for CAMVET.
