The 3 Peaks Challenge · 21 March 2009

We’re Mind, the mental health charity, working across England & Wales. We believe no one should face a mental health problem alone. We’re here for you. Whether you’re stressed, depressed or in crisis. We’ll listen, give support & advice, & fight your corner. Thanks for fundraising for national Mind.

Story

Hello,

Although we did not complete the whole Three Peaks Challenge. We raised over £700 for the mental health charity Mind.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sponsored us.

We decide not to attempt Snowdon as Lara injuryed her knee descending Scafell Pike and if we had decided to attempt Snowdon we would have climbed it in the dark.  We were all very disappointed that we could not complete the challenge but we think we made the best decision.

So thank you once again

Lara Weaver, Isobel Nash, Karen Marks and Dave Hardy

Hello Team,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for taking part and for making the 'Three Peaks Challenge' happen.  Without you guys we would not have been able to do this.  I really appreciated it.  And a very special thank you to Dave for being our support driver and managing to stay awake!  You guys all did a brilliant job.  Thanks again

Lara (who is still hobbling about)

Lara, Isobel and Karen will be taking part in the 'The Three Peaks Challenge' this weekend!!

The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the 3 highest mountains, in 3 countries, in 24  hours (during which time we also have to travel between the mountains)!!

The Peaks, in order, are:

  • Ben Nevis (Scotland - 1344m)
  • Scafell Pike (England - 978m)
  • Snowdon (Wales - 1085m)

We are planning to start the 'Challenge' at Ben Nevis at 5pm on the 4th July on to Scafell Pike and (hopefully!) finishing Snowdon at 5pm on the 5th July.

Dave has offered to be our personal trainer / support driver / chef / photographer / mountain rescue.

We are doing this to raise vital funds for people with mental health problems - We hope to rasie        £1, 000 for the mental health charity Mind.  Mind is the leading mental health charity in and , working to create a better life for everyone who suffers with mental health problems and their families.  This charity is very close to Lara's heart and we all believe they are a worthwhile organisation to support.

Mental health problems have affected Lara's family as her dad died from Alzheimer’s disease on 6th August 2001. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, affecting around 417,000 people in the . Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, which means that gradually, over time, more parts of the brain are damaged.  Lara's dad suffered from the disease for over 15 years, and as the disease progressed, her dad became more and more dependent upon others for support.  There were not sufficient resources to help when Lara and her family needed it, and her whole family struggled to cope.

Mental health problems can affect anyone, rich or poor, young or old, shattering the lives of those affected and the lives of the people close to them.  There is very little support, both financial and emotional for sufferers and their families.  This is even less for families where the sufferer is of a younger age, which is usually when it is needed the most.  We hope that the money that is raised will help to change this and provide support for those who need it the most.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Mind gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
