For those of you who don't know, I have already been to Kenya.
I went in 2007 as part of the "Fulcrum Challenge" programme and built a Primary/Nursery School in the Oldoynio region of the Loita Hills in South Kenya. I raised money for that too, and would like to thank everyone who helped me reach my target back then. Although I was only there for a short period of time, I still found the people of Kenya immensly friendly and welcoming and found it incredible how helping people in such simple ways, such as digging a pit latrine or creating a sportsfield for the children, can have such an impact on the community.
The impact a school and education can have on a community is infinate. In the short term, it develops a sense of community spirit and creates other social benefits. In the long term there is a lasting effect on the local economy, freedom of choice and development of the region as more an more recieve a better education. By building one school we left the community with a lasting building and a chance for all the young children there to attend a school with a wonderful teacher "Sarah" and then, as a result, have more choice for their future. I had an amazing time in the two weeks I spent in Kenya last time and it was partly this that promted me to apply to the Kenya Education Partnership scheme.
This time I hope to have a bigger impact in Kenya, after the ten weeks I am staying there, I will leave a school with an improved infrasturcture, improved facilities and increased enrolment. I will also strive to make this a sustainable investment so that there will be a lasting effect in the area. Helping one school, helps the whole communtity leaving generations more educated and with more choice. Spending longer in Kenya this time around will hopefully allow me to more fully immerse in the culture, and in that way be more receptive to the cultural needs of the community. Through the Kenya Education Partnership I will hopefully be able to help a bigger area and a whole community.
For example, last year a student from one of the KEP schools was accepted into university, which is an amazing step!! Not just for him but his entire family, community and his school.
The aims of KEP are investment, raising awareness and sustainable development.
I am planning to plan some events soon so I will keep people posted :D:D
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or visit the KEP website...http://www.kep.org.uk/
