In memory of my mum, I am cycling from Clevedon to Lands End with my husband Oli and my friends Kate Holgate and Laura Tanna to raise money for Sarcoma UK. Vehicular support will be provided by my dad, Michael and my mum's sister Valerie and her partner Alex. The journey will take us four days and will require us to do between approximately 55 and 70 miles per day with many hilly climbs. None of us are experienced long distance cyclists, so it will certainly be a challenge.
Sarcomas are cancers of connective tissues like muscle, nerves, blood vessels etc. They are very rare and account for about 1% of all cancer diagnoses. Sadly the chances of long term survival are currently very low. Sarcoma UKworks to fund research into improving treatment and supporting patients.
After successfully fighting off breast cancer 13 years ago, my mum was diagnosed with angiosarcoma in January 2008. This meant that the cancer was in her blood vessels. This form of sarcoma occurred as a direct result of the radiotherapy treatment she had when fighting breast cancer. She underwent radical surgery at that time but sadly the sarcoma returned in September 2010 and despite further surgery and a brave fight, my mum sadly passed away earlier this year.
My mum was a very brave women and never afraid of a challenge, which is why we want to undertake this challenge in her memory. Any donation you feel able to make would be gratefully received and will help Sarcoma UK give hope to those people battling this rare form of cancer.
