We inspire young people to believe in a brighter future

Story

A Great British Adventure! LE-3 Peaks –JOG
Having just returned from our sailing adventure in the Ellen MacArthur Thrust Skandia Round Britain voyage, we thought we would be desperate for some R+R, however, it’s had just the opposite effect!
The Ellen MacArthur Trust takes young people in recovery from cancer, leukaemia and other serious illness sailing in order to aid their recovery and renew their confidence. Having worked very closely with the charity for the past year as we planned and undertook the EMT Skandia Round Britain voyage as skipper and first mate, we have seen first-hand the devastating emotional effects of cancer on young lives, and the amazing ability of the human spirit to overcome what may seem to be overwhelming odds.
Cath Vise and Karen Fraser go for it!
The Triple Challenge: Cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats via the three peaks, climbing each on route. Karen and Cath will then have sailed round, cycled up and climbed three peaks in a year to raise money and awareness for the Ellen MacArthur Trust.

Follow Us: We’ll be updating our justgiving site, as well as our Facebook group: Great British Adventure http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=149072192186

Structure: We aim to time our cycling to be able to climb each mountain over a weekend, creating a perfect opportunity for people to join in the adventure by climbing a mountain with us.
Stage 1: Land’s End to Snowdon                                12th to 23rd October 2009
Mountain 1: Snowdon                                                    Saturday 24th October 2009

About the Ellen MacArthur Trust:
The Ellen MacArthur Trust is a national organisation that gives young people between the ages of 8-18 who have suffered from cancer and leukaemia the opportunity to take part in the new and fantastic experience of sailing.  The majority of our young people are off treatment and in recovery from cancer and leukaemia. The young people can continue to sail with the Trust up until their 18th birthday or remission date. The Trust was launched by the internationally-renowned sailor Ellen MacArthur on 2nd January 2003. In Ellen’s words:
“These are really special kids. In many ways they are just they same as everyone else, they are interested in the same things as kids their age, they have the same goals in life, but the difference is that they do this with a huge challenge ahead of them.
I face challenges out on the water, but these are challenges that I choose to do. They on the other hand don’t have this luxury. They battle against something harder than many of us could ever imagine and they do it with the biggest smiles on their faces. To me they are truly inspirational and if the EMT can help them in their battle in any way then that is a fantastic achievement.

About Round Britain:
The Ellen MacArthur Trust Scandia Round Britain voyage was inspirational – a voyage of discovery giving the young people the Trust works with a chance to challenge themselves one step further, and be a part of a great achievement – circumnavigating Britain. Over the course of a week, we offered each group of young people, aging from 9 to 24  a chance to try something new, to challenge themselves in new ways, to meet other people of their own age in similar circumstances and hoped to share our enthusiasm for sailing, but we ended our journey realising that we had met individuals who offered us lessons in bravery, hope and stamina, and now that our journey with 74 young people over 2500 miles and 132 days is over, we feel more inspired than ever that the work of the Ellen MacArthur Trust is so important to the lives of these young people. We want to continue to support the EMT with a fundraising adventure that will raise money for the trust’s work, and hopefully inspire our friends further in their recoveries.

Who we are:
Cath Vise and Karen Fraser were the skipper and mate of Scarlet Oyster, the yacht that carried the young people round Britain safely. We have been so touched by the work of the Trust that we would like to continue bringing them exposure and raising funds where we can.
Carie Biggs, our friend and supporter of the Trust, will be helping us along the way, driving a support vehicle.
Our le-3 peaks-jog is the perfect way to round off an incredible voyage, and if we complete this challenge we would have sailed round, cycled the length and climbed the three highest peaks of Great Britain in six months, all for the Ellen MacArthur Trust.

About the charity

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust inspires young people aged 8-24 to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer. For many young people simply picking up where they left off before their diagnosis just isn’t possible. So, when treatment ends the Trust’s work begins.
