Grand Union Challenge 2015 · 27 June 2015 to 28 June 2015 ·

We’re Mind, the mental health charity, working across England & Wales. We believe no one should face a mental health problem alone. We’re here for you. Whether you’re stressed, depressed or in crisis. We’ll listen, give support & advice, & fight your corner. Thanks for fundraising for national Mind.

Story

I've completed my challenge, but my fundraising page will remain open and any donations will still be gratefully received and acknowledged by myself and by Mind, so don't let that stop you.

On June 27th I walked 100km in 24 hours along the Grand Union canal for Mind.

I'm a freelance journalist, formerly a reporter onThe Times. In 2014 I suffered a severe manic episode followed by depression. I was diagnosed with bipolar. It took me the best part of a year to get back on my feet. Thankfully I am now well, back in work and happy (but not too happy!). My time within the mental healthcare system has made me aware of how many people are suffering with life-limiting mental illness. Many are extremely intelligent and talented people who need support to stay well and to show society what they have to offer. There have also been tragedies and friends I have lost. Mind does an incredible job filling in some of the many gaps left by the NHS and local authority mental health teams. The charity also has a vital role in fighting stigma and changing the public image of people with mental illness. In memory of Clive, who might just have survived if there had been a bed for him when he needed it.
