<p><span style="color: #a52a2a;">Chimpanzees, gorillas and more than 40 other mammal species are hunted for their meat in the Lebialem Highlands of Cameroon. Hunting for bushmeat generates vital income for rural communities but the trade in bushmeat is unsustainable. Species extinctions, food shortages and additional financial difficulties for forest-adjacent communities are almost inevitable outcomes of this trade. The Lebialem Hunters' Beekeeping Initiative aims to reduce financial dependence on bushmeat and the volume of species harvested by providing hunters with an alternative income through beekeeping. More than 140 hunters from eight villages have now been trained as beekeepers and given the materials and equipment necessary to construct their own bee hives. Demand for honey and bee products outstrips supply in Cameroon. Using this market opportunity, the project aims to train an increasing proportion of hunters in sustainable beekeeping practices.</span></p>
