Yes it is true.....No joke!!! In September I will be cycling from London to Paris 4 days 360 miles for the Downs Syndrome Association. Quite a challenge for someone who failed her cycling proficiency at school and once got trapped in a fold up Raleigh while cycling along Brighton sea front!
I need to raise a minimum of £1250 before the end of June I need your help!!
As many of you already know the DSA is a cause very dear to my heart and finalIy I have the chance to do some well needed fundraising. My special and truly inspirational sister Kerry was born with Downs Syndrome. Thanks to my amazing parents and family, constant learning support and development in her early years she has exceeded all expectations and now at 27 leads a happy fulfilling life living alone in her own flat and working part time for Sainsbury’s we are incredibly proud of her.
Many of you know Kerry what an inspiration she is, how many hearts and people she touches and how much sunshine she brings.I am doing this challenge for the DSA to help give children with Downs Syndrome the best start and the essential support they need to communicate and live a full rewarding life they deserve just like Kerry.
What is Downs Syndrome?
Down's syndrome is a life long genetic condition that causes delays in learning and development. Downs Syndrome happens by the presence of an extra chromosome in the baby's cells. Most people have 2 copies of all chromosomes, but people with Down’s syndrome have 3 copies of chromosome 21. Every day in the between one and two babies are born with Down's syndrome. Down’s syndrome is never anyone's fault it just happens. Like any other child, children vary in their abilities and achievements from birth. All people with Down's syndrome will have some degree of learning disability. This means it takes longer to process information, to learn new skills and communicate. Many people with Down's syndrome will experience other health implications and over half of children born with Downs Syndrome will be born with a hole in the heart or bowel problem. With the right help and support many people can acquire the essential practical and social skills even if this takes them longer than usual.
Supporting the Down's syndrome Association where your money will go!
The DSA is a national charity dedicated solely to every aspect of living successfully with Down's syndrome. Providing and supporting people with Down's syndrome, their families and carers, and professionals who work with them, to improve knowledge of the condition and continuously champion their rights.
Education, learning and development are fundamental in providing people with Downs Syndrome the opportunity to communicate and opportunities to lead happy fulfilling lives. Your kind donations will help provide counselling, advice, speech and language therapy and educational officer support.
