Our personal message:

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.

We are cycling Lands End to John O'Groats in 9 days (our route is about 110 miles a day) starting on 20th June and as a twist we will also climb/run up and down Ben Nevis as we pass through Fort William - well it seems silly not to!

The reason for selecting Hearing Dogs for Deaf People as our chosen charity is Ian's mother-in-law is deaf and has a hearing dog, Megan, (that's the dogs name!) and it is both a great help and companion to her.  Ian's wife Fiona and both her sisters, Moira and Heather, have inherited the same condition and they all benefit greatly from digital hearing aids. Whilst they are only in their 40's, their current hearing loss is described as moderate to severe and is expected to deteriorate over the next few years.  They too may therefore benefit from Hearing Dog's services at some point in the future.

That is why we are proud to support the work of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People: a national charity and the only organisation in the that trains dogs to alert deaf people to important household sounds and danger signals. Briefly, the dogs are trained to alert their owners by touching them with a paw, then leading them to the source of the sound. For dangers signals such as the smoke alarm, the dogs will touch then drop to the floor to indicate danger. Around 70% of dogs selected for training come from rescue centres or are unwanted pets.

Nearly nine million of thepopulation experience some degree of hearing loss. That’s one person in every seven. Hearing dogs change lives. They alert their deaf owners to sounds we take for granted, providing greater independence, confidence and security.

The waiting list for a hearing dog currently stands at two years and Hearing Dogs rely totally on the generosity of individuals and organisations to support them in transforming the lives of deaf people and unwanted puppies.  Our target of £5,000 will cover the initial training of a hearing dog and also the ongoing support required throughout its working life, so please give as generously as you can.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Hearing Dogs for Deaf People will receive your money faster and, if you are a taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your all support.

Ian and Steve
