Story

Our 5 man team are preparing to take part in a 24 hour karting challenge at the world famous Le Mans circuit in France to raise money for a new Linear Accelerator (Linac) Radiography machine for the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading.

The new machine will be the first of its kind in the country and only the second in Europe and will allow the treatment of an additional 40 cancer patients every day as well as enabling clinicians to understand and treat cancer more effectively. To date, our Charity have raised £900,000, just £100,000 short of the £1 million they need to buy and install the new machine, so please dig deep and donate today to help us reach this target

About the Event

The race starts at 12 noon Saturday 30th June and finishes at 12 noon the following day, taking place on the kart circuit called ‘Circuit Alain Prost’ which is situated inside the actual Le Mans circuit. The twin-engined pro karts we’ll be racing reach speeds of up to 70 mph and the race itself is physically very demanding but we know that people undergoing cancer treatment have far greater challenges to overcome which is why we have chosen to support the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

We’ll take turns to do 1.5 hours stints in the kart, only stopping to quickly refuel and change drivers. 24hrs and around 1,500 laps later we’re hoping to finish in the top 10 of the 40 kart field. One member of our team, James Briggs, has previous experience finishing 3rd in the event in 2005. "The last time I took part in this event I literally had to be lifted out of the kart after each stint. My fingers seized up, my bruises had bruises and it took me 3 days to recover!"

Needless to say we’re not looking forward to the uncomfortable drive home, but we hope that the satisfaction of knowing that we’ve helped raise some money for a very worthwhile cause will ease the pain from those bruises just a little.
