DUQC 24 Hour Basketball Match · 29 May 2016

Established in 1981, the Newman Holiday Trust began by running a one week summer holiday for children with special needs. The Trust now provides holidays for about 130 children with special needs aged four to sixteen each year, in various locations around the UK. Due to the high level of skilled care they require or financial circumstances, the children selected for these breaks would not otherwise receive a holiday. The holidays provide a range of fun activities in a safe and supportive environment and use a care ration of one helper to one child at all times. The Trust is an entirely voluntary organization and owes its success to over 200 people who dedicate their free time to helping these children. This voluntary structure ensures that every penny raised goes directly towards a child's holiday.

Story

I have the pleasure of captaining a team of dedicated individuals  with the goal of raising as much money as possible for the Newman Holiday Trust. We are participating in a 24 hour long basketball match (yes, you read correctly, 24 hours) with the intent of raising money for the Newman Holiday Trust.

This is a charity close to my heart; I have been lucky enough to volunteer on a number of their holidays. It is a charity with no employed staff members, meaning every person working with the Newman Trust is a volunteer, and every penny donated goes to making a holiday of a lifetime for a child with disabilities.

The week-long holidays are the highlight for many of the children's summers and something they look forward to all year round. The children have a range of disabilities from physical to severe learning difficulties but each child is cared for by a single helper for the entire week. Care can include help with washing, dressing, feeding etc, but most of all ensuring they have a great week. This creates a bond of friendship that ensures the children have one of the best holidays of their lives, with activities ranging from sing-alongs and talent shows to days out to farms and even theme parks.

Whatever you can spare, please donate it to this wonderful charity. I can promise you, your money will go towards making memories for children with special needs that will last a lifetime.
