Flora London Marathon 2009 · 26 April 2009 ·

The Jane Goodall Institute runs several sanctuaries in Africa for orphan chimpanzees, victims of habitat destruction and the bushmeat trade. Through our global education programme, 'Roots & Shoots', young people are encouraged to take positive action to secure the continued survival of the planet. In Africa, we provide training in sustainable land use, tree nurseries, primary healthcare, family planning, AIDS education, water projects, scholarships for girls and micro-credit schemes for women.

Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page

Update as at 27 April --- we did it !! Not a great time -- 5 hours 25 mins -- but a combination of my back issues and the heat ( where did that sun come from) .. meant it was not my greatest run. Dave the chimp wore his headgear ( very hot) at the start and finish as well as the rest of it --- and got on TV as we crossed the line. It went very fast -- and its a great occasion. I cant move this morning -- my quads are a particular issue but boy did last nights bubbly taste good !

Thanks to you all - we passed our target and raised 2500 pounds - fantatsic everyone thank you.

I would encourage every one to do it -- once !

love Lesleyxxxx

Update as of april 24th ---- well it was all going well until the fatal morning of april 16th -- when i woke up unable  to bend down! and in pain etc etc. So ---- I have a lower back issue --- not caused by anything specific apart probably for the continual road pounding over the last 3 months. Various physios, osteopaths later etc -- and its a bit better -- and am still tyring to start on sunday  -- juts dont know if i can do it due to the back pain -- so i ll let you all know. Dave the chimp is running regardless and I will do my best to too - knowing that you have all been so brilliant in supporting us and Jane

will update you on sunday - please keep fingers crossed

Yep its me -- and my "trainer" Keith -- who won't be doing the run on the big day -- but who has suffered (me) on the long weekend slogs... as I've been trying (and I mean trying!) to extend my distances so as to have some hope of getting around before they re-open the roads that day!

I am doing this for the Jane Goodall Institute -- of which I am a UK trustee -- who are working hard to prevent the extinction of chimps through conservation, education and research. It's a great cause and anything you can donate to sponsor me would be really appreciated. I am to be accompanied on the day by an old friend... probably dressed as a chimp! -- and he's a proper marathon runner (Dave from Jburg for those of you who know him). I am hoping the outfit will slow him down???

I'll keep this page updated -- so far I can struggle c 30km... which is not exactly the 42k required -- and let's just say that if a "runners high" exists -- well I haven't found it yet and I rather prefer being a couch potato! This training has made our Mount Killy climb of 5 years ago feel rather easy (though I might not have said that at the time!). I have now done one 35km ( april 5th) -- and in the Eastbourne sun it nearly killed me -- and thats the longest i do now pre the main event -- thank god for "tapering" ie running less and eating  carbs from now on in -- might not be the way to interpret the books but it seems to be what they are saying -- so "merely" a 21km next weekend then -- and Keith for one is celebrating as his knee has nearly given out.!

Please help if you can - we'd really appreciate it.
