THE FINISH

I bowled in to John o'Groats on Monday afternoon after a fantastic trip - I was almost sorry to finish, and walking feels like quite an odd activity. Thank you everyone for all the support and all the donations. Have a look at Lewis' lejog 2010.

Special thanks to Ken and Kay, John and Linda, Anisa and Alastair, and Aunt Connie for their hospitality. And thank you to our off line contributors, including Aileen Tyson, Connie Morrison, Flora Wotherspoon, John Fullarton, Kay Thwaite, Ann E Hall, Margot McInnes, Doug and Janice Stewart and Alan and Loryn Loveland.

A bit more cycling was on my list of things to do when I retired last year. The photos on my leaving card show my friends were listening and laughing so this Sunday the 13th I’ll be getting on my bike at Land’s End and heading north and uphill until I get to John o’Groats. Usually on my bike trips I’ve had a dozen or so George Watson's College school kids or my wife to set the pace but this time I’ll be on my own with only my iPhone for company.

As well as a scenic tour of the country I’m hoping to raise some money for World Child Cancer. This is quite a new charity just starting to fundraise in Scotland. It works in developing countries where only one in ten of the children diagnosed with cancer are given treatment or pain relief. Read about what they’ve achieved already and what they could do with some more funds at http://www.childcancer.org

I’ll try and keep people posted on my progress (Twitter: lms5qc and Facebook: lms5qc).

Update Friday 18 June

I’ve survived the hills of Cornwall and Devon, the disappearing cycle paths of Bristol and the scariest 12 miles of my cycling career on a dual carriageway into Liverpool. Now I’m letting a ferry across the Mersey take the strain and heading I hope for a strong drink on the other side.

I've met some lovely people along the way. Among them, Kings Cycles in Taunton that didn't charge for repairing my bike and the people at the beautiful Melverley Church House campsite who gave me a free night's camping and a donation for World Child Cancer.

Update Sunday 20 June

Bit of a setback to day when I realized that my brilliant idea of sending the tent on ahead had not take account of the fact Post Offices are shut on Sundays. But the weather and the scenery have been great.

There were a few moments of excitement/ terror when I stopped to take a picture of a No Tanks sign on a pleasant country road and fully armed soldiers appeared running across the field towards me shouting and shooting. However, they ignored me and went on to shout and shoot at something else. Tomorrow I’ll be back across the border and in Edinburgh on Tuesday.

Update Tuesday 22nd June

I thought a Monday night in Melrose would be quiet but they'd put on a full-scale horse parade - maybe that's the way to travel. Melrose to Edinburgh by the Sustrans route is a lovely ride and 750 miles later I’m back in Edinburgh with only 300 or thereabouts to go. I’ll set off again on Thursday and head north over the bridge.
