Story

Every year, the girls of Sydenham High School, Year 8, have a competition to see which class can raise the most money for there selected charity. The competition, affectionately known as ‘The Apprentice’,  lets the children organise their own events, encouraging them to find out not only how to raise money, but also, by finding out about their chosen charity, what works best for them. Normally the classes will have cake sales or car wash days, but this year the class of 8Y have decided that they want to do something a bit more extravagant and have arranged a ‘Grand Charity Ball’ for their chosen charity ‘Whizz Kidz’.

Whizz Kidz provide disabled children and young people with vital mobility equipment, opportunities to meet and have fun, and training to help them gain skills and look forward to a bright future. The girls set up a working group and have set out to make this a truly memorable event, with music, dancing, a special raffle, local press coverage, a film presentation by the charity and a number of other money making sidelines.

The girls have arranged the whole thing, roping in a few teachers and parents for the more mundane tasks, making sure that all the health and safety aspects of the event have been covered, designing and organising the printing of all the tickets and posters and generally ensuring that the night will run as smoothly as possible.

The class are split into various teams to deal with all the various aspects of the ball; for instance the raffle team decided that as this was such a special event that they needed special prizes and set about contacting a host of stars to help them achieve this. So far they have;

·         Signed shirt from Rafa Nadal
·         Signed Sweatband from Novak Djokovic
·         Signed Arsenal Mens shirt
·         Signed Arsenal Ladies shirt
·         Rachel Riley dress from Countdown
·         Signed pictures from ‘Cat and Alfie’
·         Tickets to see Diversity at the O2
·         Amir Khan signed boxing gloves
·         Jon Isner signed racket
·         Alex Monroe necklace
·         ….and they are still collecting more

But we want to raise much more. If you would like to help, please donate. Every single penny helps

The following message is from our whole class

Imagine your childhood without running around or playing games.  Imagine having a child with the inability to walk or move, without getting tired.

This is what ‘Whizz Kidz’ aims to change. They provide mobility wheelchairs for those who can't afford them. These wheelchairs are individually selected to fit each child's needs and preferences. They can speed along so the children can play games and they have an extendable seat, so the children can be higher up to speak to adults or friends.  But most of all, these wheelchairs give back a childhood.

When looking at the website, some of the stories touched our hearts and so we decided to host a Grand Charity Ball, to raise money for this incredible charity.

Thank you
