ChildLine – the UK’s free, confidential 24 hour helpline for children and young people – celebrates its 20th birthday on Monday 30 October. Since its launch in 1986, the 0800 1111 number has been the source of help for nearly two million children.
The helpline has never had the resources to answer every call. Over 159,000 children were counselled last year about a wide range of problems including sexual and physical abuse, bullying, family relationships, worries about friends’ welfare and teenage pregnancy. But of the 4,500 children who call each day, around 2,000 are unable to get through to the help they need.
ChildLine’s 20th birthday goal is to raise £20m to help us achieve our target to answer another 1,000 children every day and to keep helping the 2,500 we help already.
With funds raised through the Birthday Appeal we will be able to plan to recruit more volunteer counsellors, open more lines and create new call centres. Our dream is to answer all the children the first time they ring. But we can only do this if the public support.
If we raise £1598 through this page, ChildLine will be able to recruit and train another volunteer counsellor for our helpline who can go on to help hundreds of children who may have nowhere else to turn.
