Story

Recipe: Have an idea and invite 3 of your friends out for a drink and you end up with a crazy challenge!!! They cannot say they didn’t know as they each signed with an X an old beer mat...These 4 people (3 living in Southampton and 1 Stratford) created a Team named “Life On The Open Waves” and have decided to go on a mission: to row over the English Channel this summer 2010 (end of July, beginning of August according to the weather).

Abigail Hanson, Chloe Steele, Ashley Spencer Hurrell and Olivier Cexus are seeking your support for this challenge happening this summer to raise money for Cancer Research UK, the world's leading independent organization dedicated to beating cancer through research. Cancer Research UK support research into all aspects of cancer through the work of scientists, doctors and nurses. We have the ambition to raise far more than £50.000....

Let’s raise a bit more the profile: the English Channel is 23 miles from Calais to Dover and is the world’s busiest shipping lane. On top of this, none of us have ever been in a rowing boat and the training using rowing boats will only start in March 2010. Until then we have realised that our fitness is not up to what you may call, an athletic standard, some of us have been waking up nearly every morning at 5:30 am to go to the gym for an hour before work; as well as going back to the same gym in the evening and the other has bought trainers for the first time. To add to this exciting adventure, one has a phobia of big ships, the other one has a phobia of the deep blue sea and the last one a fear of seagulls. Over 6 months, the 4 of us will train extremely hard for this challenge that should take about 6 hours to complete...give or take a few days.

We are completely committed in succeeding this challenge.

A website will be online shortly but you can already follow our progress and keep up to date with events that will be organised until the challenge takes place on FaceBook by joining the Group: Life On The Open Waves: Channel Crossing 2010...
