Big Battlefield Bike Ride · 24 May 2010
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and considering making a donation.
As you may know, my youngest son Alex is currently training as an Army Officer at Sandhurst Royal Military Academy, and to show my support for him and indeed the rest of the British Armed Forces, in May 2010 I will be travelling to France and attempting to cycle 350 miles over 5 days, in order to raise funds for the "Help for Heroes" charity.
As many of you will know I am not the most accomplished cyclist! My experience stretches no further than cycling to and from work about 10 times a year at the most - so you can see the scale of the challenge I am facing, and so the New Year will see me begin my training plan in earnest!
A big thank you in advance for any donation you have made, and I promise to do my utmost to complete this challenge and raise as much money as I can for "Help for Heroes".
Thank you for your time and (hopefully) your generosity!
Anyone who has visited this page will hopefully see that I have made some great strides in my endeavour to accomplish my challenge.
I have a new FELT road bike (wonderful, Supplied by Bill Nickson Cycles of Leyland), new outfits, and a renewed vigour to accomplish what I set out to acheive.
Up to press I have had a few days of 40 miles plus, including one which took me over the infamous Waddington Fell, from the end of the Hodder valley (Dunsop Bridge) over to Clitheroe. This almost finished me off. I fell off my new bike when the chain decided to come off, followed very quickly by me! Bruised and battered, I continued and finished the ride!
I am now working towards 50 miles in a day, but I will try and do this training on the flat roads of the Fylde.
I do hope that you can see the severity of the challenge that I have in front of me, and hope that you will be happy to sponsor me on behalf of Help for Heroes.
Any contributions will be gratefully received.
Thank you. Linda
News Flash!!
Managed a 65 mile day on Sunday just gone. This time all on the flat !
I have spent a couple of Saturdays in the company of Garstang Cycling Club. They are a great bunch of Boys and Girls, A real mix of characters. They have done wonders for my confidence, my stamina and of course my enthusiasm.
I have accompanied them on a couple of 60 mileish jaunts, one of which was the journey north to Lancaster, along the course of the River Lune and turning up into the Trough of Bowland at High Bentham. This then leads over the Trough to Slaidburn and cuts back towards Garstang again over the Trough. This ride is described as 'HILLY'.
They're not kidding !
Well! Off we went!
What a great send off, Buglers, A piper, and the Royal Marine Band on a red hot day!
The signing in and transfer of luggage and cycles went without a hitch, and soon we were all (275 of us) wending our way to the docks 2 miles away, to meet up with the ferry for our overnight trip to France.
I didn't know anyone else on this trip, I felt very alone initially, but I was soon made very welcome by the many different groups of people taking part. People from all walks of life, and all extremely enthusiastic and happy!
More to come!
