My chosen charity:
'Little Havens Children's Hospice provides respite breaks and end of life care for children living with serious conditions and who are not expected to reach adulthood'. Their aim at the hospice is to make each child's experience and that of their family, as comfortable as possible, providing unique care for each individual both at home and at the hospice. They also continue to provide aftercare for the family after the child has died.
Their Philosophy is that 'each child cared for at little Havens should be encouraged to live life to the full'.
Some examples of the care they offer are: nursing care, 24hr help line, bereavement counselling and sibling support, occupational therapy, play therapy, Physiotherapy, education, Chaplaincy, medical services, special dietary catering, relief to parents from continual care, an environment which allows quality time to be spent together and apart, support to the family as the child dies either at home or in Hospital or at the hospice.
To keep the Hospice open it require £2.3million a year, most of which is raised through local fund-raising events.
A bit about Kilimanjaro:
Kilimanjaro, in North Tanzania, rises 5891.8m (19330ft) above its base making it the highest peak in Africa and the highest walkable mountain in the world. Technically the climb is fairly easy but the low temperatures and high altitude make it a difficult and dangerous trek. Most people suffer from some form of Altitude sickness which at its most severe can be fatal, approx 10 people die each year on Kilimanjaro from Altitude sickness. All climbers will suffer discomfort, shortage of breath,hypothermia and headaches and some will abandon the climb at lower altitudes. However, most (approx 80%) young, fit people reach the Uhuru summit.
My climb:
Starting on 3rd Aug 2009 I will be climbing via the Machame route over 7 days. I will be camping the whole route (no huts or coca-cola sellers!)
