Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page here is my story :
Since the age of 14 I have suffered with alopecia. Growing up this was something that I could manage and lived ok with, the small patches would come and I would manage to cover them up until they eventually grew back. That was until about 2 years ago when yet again the hair loss started but this time it was different, this time it didn't grow back it just kept on slowly falling. Last year I was given the news by my consultant that due to the pattern of the hair loss that this was likely to be permanent, I was losing my hair and it wasn't coming back, I had Alopecia areata (which basically means the loss of all head hair). How do you deal with that kind of news - well at first you are in denial, then shock, then anger yes I've felt and gone through every one of them in great detail. Questions like why me, what did I do to deserve this, what would people say and how was I going to look - the questions are endless.
There is no cure for alopecia although some treatments are available and they don't carry a 100% success rate. Support is a massive factor with dealing with this condition - that and wigs!!!
Alopecia UK provides information, advice and support for people (children and adults) with alopecia in a number of ways with both on-line support forums and support groups for people to meet in person. They support research into treatments and the psychological aspects of coping with alopecia.
Their mission is to improve the lives of those affected by this and I want to help them by running this half marathon and raising as much money as possible. I have a fantastic support network from my amazing husband and children to all my family and friends but also knowing that this charity is available to seek advise and just maybe understand a little more than the people around me is a great comfort.
Thank you for reading my story and I really hope that it has inspired you to donate (even just a little).
Liz xx
