Team on their marks
St.Albans Observer
A TEAM of St Albans netballers are taking to the Silverstone motoracing track to raise money for cancer battling Barnet boy Jack Brown.
The women of the SAS Netball Club, based at St Albans High School for Girls, will run a half marathon on the circuit on Sunday, March 18, and hope to raise thousands of pounds for the appeal - money desperately needed to pay for specialist treatment in the US.
Jack, five, suffers from a rare cancer called neuroblastoma, a solid tumour strand of the disease that attacks the nerve tissue of the neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis.
Unable to get the revolutionary treatment needed on the NHS, Jack's parents Yvonne and Richard, both Metropolitan Police officers, have been forced to move to New York where Jack is undergoing specialist antibody treatment to keep his illness at bay.
Sally Whittle, a fellow officer and former work colleague of Mrs Brown, said: "When I heard about Jack's condition I naturally wanted to help him.
"When we had the idea about the run I didn't have to ask any of the girls to take part because they all volunteered."
The Browns, who need to raise more than £375,000 to cover Jack's medical bills, are relying on donations and fundraising to give their son a fighting chance.
