These are some of the words that one of our members faced recently...
"My mum suffered a massive stroke on Sunday 17/02/08 and was rushed into hospital, where tests and scans showed she had a large blood clot on the brain pressing down affecting her speech and causing her throat to narrow, she was totally paralysed down her right side, tests over the next few days showed she also had a chest infection, she was unconcious, occasionally opening her left eye,but only slightly and only for a second or two.
On Monday 18/02/08 she was transferred to the stroke unit of the hospital where she received specialist care,we,as a family would visit her everyday, talk to her, play her some of her favourite music whilst all the time hoping that somehow she would beat the odds and survive this terrible affliction.
Whilst visiting her we were brought into close contact of other stroke victims, each in varying degree of suffering and recovery, and we noticed the dedication off the staff and the obvious love of the job they we're doing, and it was with love they were doing it,it shone from them.
Around the same time my friends on the lmzf decided to nominate the stroke association as our chosen charity,a wonderful gesture we thought, and one that mum would be fully supportive of,indeed we told her of the plans and kept her upto date with all the good luck messages bieng posted,as we believed she could here us even though she could not communicate back to us.
On Wednesday 27/02/08 mums consultant called me and my wife in to discuss her progress,as we were the ones liasing with the hospital with all things to do with mum, what he said to us that day hit us very, very hard, the outlook was not very good.
He told us that the blood clot was not decreasing in size as they had hoped, the chest infection wasn't iether and now she had got fluid around the heart and in her lungs, they couldn't perform surgery to remove the clot as mum had been on a blood thinning agent for many years, meaning that if during any operation she were to hemorrage they probably wouldn't be able to stop it,and he told us to prepare ourselves for the worse.
On Friday 29/02/08 sadly mum passed away, there simply was too much for her body to cope with,so now we are left, as many before us have, with a massive part of our lives gone, but never forgotten, we have spoken about the charity and decided on two things :
1) At the funeral it is going to be flowers from family only, anybody else can give donations to the lmzf charity via this page.
2) We as a family are still going to donate to it ourselves.
We hope that not only will this help other sufferers, but maybe this message will help those who are undecided as to wether or not to donate to this charity.
Kindest Regards
Garrey,Liz and the Family
Here are some words from an email from "The Stroke Association" regarding what the money can be used for!
Your donation will make a real difference. For example, £20 helps to keep the Stroke Helpline open for an hour, £50 helps The Stroke Association publish and distribute 600 information booklets, and £500 helps to provide specialist speech and language training to enable staff to support and empower people with aphasia (a communication impairment) on their road to recovery
Whether we are providing support through our community or information services funding pioneering research campaigning or providing welfare grants to help improve the quality of stroke survivors lives, we rely upon voluntary income to help fund these activities.
Please accept our warmest thanks for the support you have provided - we greatly appreciate it.
Of course it's not just us who are indebted to you; thousands of stroke survivors are now facing a more promising future thanks to your support.
