Thank you for visiting our page, its now 4 weeks til the run, we training hard and very confident we ll complete the 10 miles. The reason for doing this and the charity we ve chosen is personal to me. As a survivor of Meningitis I have grown up aware of how this cruel illness nearly robbed me of my life and how even now it effected my family.
Here's what happened:
A few years ago.....not too many..............er about 1972 to be precise I was a happy content little baby then I become unwell. My parents called the GP round several times who every time said my mother was over anxious I just had a cold. About 4 days into this my parents called the surgery again and requested a different GP, this alone is probably one of the main factors that came to save my life!!! The doctor turned up and told my parents to call for an ambulance I was seriously ill.
On arriving at the hospital I was diagnosed with Meningitis and Pneumonia, my parents were told to prepare for the worst. I wasnt expected to survive and an emergency christening was held at my hospital cot. The waiting started but I wasnt giving up, when there appeared to be a glimmer of hope on the horizon that I might actually survive. The doctor informed my parents that the glimmer of hope was actually a very dark cloud because if I was remotely luckly enough to survive, which was highly unlikely, I would at best survive with severe brain damage
What a situation to be in...................
I went on not only to survive meningitis but to survive with nothing other than a minor hearing defect!!!!!!!!!!!
A miracle that I m here today and that I m here and able to live a "normal" and happy life.
Because of this and the field that I work in I am aware of how my life could have been so I want to do something to raise awareness and funds for this cruel illness.
The Meningitis Research Foundation are a fantastic organisation that I have been a member of for many years. They are on hand for support, advice and guidance. They also fund vital research into this illness and campaign to raise awareness and spot the the early symptoms of Meningitis.

I met Lou a few years now and we have been close ever since, I am so grateful to have a friend like her in my life. I couldn’t imagine what life would have been like if Lou had died from meningitis, and I’d run the Great South Run 100 times if it means someone like her is saved from these diseases.

Thanks to my mum’s survival I'm here and have a beautiful little sister. My mum’s motto is ‘experience everything and confront your fears’. I thinks that’s a pretty sound outlook for a mum. She’s safe
