Hey Hey Hey Y'all! So I'm doing it! http://www.angkormarathon.org/
Hoping to raise money for Grace House - the project I'm volunteering in Cambodia. As well as running a School (and just recently, a pre-school class) for poorest children across 3villages, we have also just started to build a medical room, run adult English classes and want to get a community garden underway.
For more details on the project - check out this link-
The children, the Khmer staff, the parents and the people of the community are genuinely thankful. Although there is not an attitude of reliance. The people within the communities are proud and have aspirations - they don't want handouts but to make a better life for themselves through their own efforts, and Grace House supports this. Using their own initiative, the mum's have just started a weaving class and on the first day of an adult English class, two classrooms were filled!! The community garden project will give around 10 of the poorest families in the area, access to the land and seeds so that they might be able to grow their own food. So things are moving fast - the enthusiasm and dedication is there - we just need the funds to make it happen. So please be assured - any money you give, goes direct to where it is most needed within the local community.
Any donation is gratefully received!! $1buys a kid some flip flops - such a simple thing, but many children don't have any! so ANYTHING you can give will go towards something!
Some facts regarding the poverty that is here: Malnutrition is common among Cambodian children – 45% are moderately or severely underweight. 41% of the population has access to safe drinking water - only , and have less access to clean water. has the highest under 5 mortality rate in the and Pacific region. Some 61,000 Cambodian children died in 2005 before reaching their fifth birthday.
On a personal level -in just the 7weeks that I have been here, I'm aware of 3 children's deaths :-(
Your money will have a real impact!
Many many thanks.
and lots of love from me x
