Story

A team of five intrepid ‘runners’ here at LSE Enterprise is running a half marathon for World Child Cancer on 7 October. Most of us have hardly run more than 10km in the past; now we need to run 21km. We need your help.

We chose WCC because of personal encounters with cancer, and/or a recognition that there is a pressing need for more treatment for children with cancer in less developed countries.

To name but a few projects, WCC is currently funding the establishment of two satellite paediatric oncology centres in the Philippines, training for doctors and nurses as well as four satellite centres in Ghana, and a training programme for around 570 healthcare professionals in Bangladesh. Your money will go a long way:

£10

Will provide effective pain relief for four children for a week in Malawi

£25

Will fund reagents used in the diagnosis of 10 children in Bangladesh

£50

Will provide life-saving chemotherapy drugs for one child in Ghana

£150

Will fund materials used in a child cancer awareness campaign in the Philippines

£400

Will fund a specialist child cancer nurse for a month in Colombia

£2,000

Will fund a week long twinning visit to Cameroon by a doctor from South Africa to provide training and treatment

Around 80% of all child cancer cases globally occur in low and middle income countries yet fewer than a third of children are diagnosed in these countries, and of those that are treated less than 20% survive.

All donations are welcome, many thanks in advance!

All best wishes,

In low- and middle-income countries fewer than 1 in 10 children with cancer are diagnosed, treated or given pain relief. World Child Cancer improves cancer care for some of the world’s poorest children by creating international twinning partnerships between medics hospitals and parent support groups
