My story
Hi and thanks for taking the time to stop and look at our just giving page, all you need to do now is donate!!!!
We perhaps rather foolishly have decided to take part in the Kilimanjaro challenge and community project (http://www.differenttravel.com/destinations/package-kilimanjaro.php). The trip includes three days voluntary work within the local village school at Moshi, Tanzania and, climbing the highest free standing mountain in the world….. Mt. Kilimajaro.
The motivation for this stupidity is Amy and Friends …. : )
We decided that we wanted a challenge and climbing Kili really appealed to us, the next step was finding a local charity to raise funds for. After researching local charities we stumbled across Amy and Friends, Cockayne Syndrome support. www.amyandfriends.org
Cockayne Syndrome (CS) is a rare genetic disorder characterised by poor growth, premature aging, sensitivity to sunlight, moderate to profound developmental and neurological delays, and a shortened lifespan. As yet there is no cure!!!
We arranged a meeting with Jayne (Amy’s mum) who founded the charity and informed us of the amazing work the charity does, not just helping the families of children suffering from CS, but by raising awareness and the profile as many children go undiagnosed and untreated.
The money will be used to fund a retreat that is held annually for sufferers of CS and their families, this is an international event organised by the Amy and Friends charity. Everybody that participates benefits greatly as it gives them the chance to meet other families affected by CS, a chance to speak with health care professionals about the progress of CS treatment and research and, more importantly gives families a chance to relax and be around the extended Amy and Friends family.
Although this climb will be a fantastic experience for both of us, we are not doing it just for the fun and memories but to help raise awareness and much needed money for Amy and Friends so, PLEASE, PLEASE dig deep, and follow the links to see who and why we are asking you to donate your hard earned cash!!!!
When I told Jayne that we were scared about the climb she said:
‘Don't be scared.....take each child who has lost the ability to walk in your heart, take each child that never got to walk in your mind and when u reach the summit wave to each child who has gone to heaven as they will be watching you both and smiling’ When things get hard on Kili which we know they will, we will remember this and all your donations and this will spur us on to reach the summit.
Thanks Lucy and Emma xxx
