My story
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online!!!!
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me. The Medical Foundation For The Care Of Victims Of Torture will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
This is what your money can do:
- Your £30 could pay for the care a child receives in psychotherapy, which can be central in helping them to overcome their fears.
- Your £60 could buy the practical items like a bed or cooker that are so important when starting a new life away from danger.
- Your £100 could pay for a doctor or caseworker to visit someone in detention before their asylum case is heard.
- Your £250 could pay for quarter of a year's full treatment for a survivor of torture.
- Your £500 could provide six months' treatment for a survivor of torture.
- Your £750 could provide a year's supply of materials for the Children's Therapeutic Group.
- Your £1000 could provide a year's treatment for a survivor of torture.
In November 2005, following six months of intensive physical training, I am going to attempt to walk across the Escambray Mountains in Cuba. Starting off in Havana, and ending up in - Trinidad - just off the south coast. If I make it across Cuba not only will I be achieving a personal life long dream, but I will hopefully contribute to bringing to an end the nightmare of others.
I have been hugely impressed by THE MEDICAL FOUNDATION FOR THE VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE AND TORTURE and their work. They are the ONLY nationwide organisation that offers help and support to the SURVIVORS OF WAR AND TORTURE.
My experience as a VSO volunteer of the conflict in the North East of Sri Lanka and the trauma and devastation it can wreak on ordinary people's lives deeply moved me. Help of the kind offered by the Medical Foundation is absolutely VITAL and needs to be supported and extended.
Despite all of my physical and mental training and preparation, the biggest challenge so far seems to be finding the financial support to make this event a success for the charity. This is where I hope you can potentially come in! Please do not feel obliged, but if at all possible - I would really appreciate it if you could provide some financial support in order to help me achieve my £2,500 fundraising goal.
Many thanks for your support.
Lucy
Fundraising efforts - I am working very hard on this!!!!
7th April - I spoke at the Banbury Business Breakfast. The small talk was very warmly received and a huge amount of awareness was raised. Around 30 people took away leaflets about the Medical Foundation and expressed interest in supporting its cause. I will keep you posted about the funds raised from that.
23rd April - I spoke about the work of the Medical Foundation at the regional Quaker Meeting in Sibford Gower. This was a fantastic day built around the theme of trust. To date £460 has been donated.
10th May - I spoke at the Banbury Women's Business Lunch
7th June - I gave a talk as a guest speaker at the Rotary Club in Banbury and raised awareness of and money for the Medical Foundation
12th June - Olwen Goodwin and I held 'The Sale of the Year!' - of weekenders clothes and the proceeds went towards the work of the Medical Foundation. A total of £650 was raised.
14th October - Talk given to 300 pupils at Sibford Quaker School in October 2005. They will be donating the proceeds from their non uniform day to the Medical Foundation.
9th November - Well received talk on Funny Boy by Shyam Selvadurai (a Sri Lankan author writing about the conflict in Sri Lanka) given to the Hook Norton Literature group in November 2005.
