Story
Well, that's it - I made it! The challenge is complete and I live to tell the tale. The cycling was tough and nothing could have prepared us for the day on sand, it was impossible at best. But we made it through and were rewarded with an ice cold beer on arrival at the evenings accommodation. I'm not sure if that was a reward for the sand or perhaps so we wouldn't notice that the shower was actually in the bedroom at the end of the bed (?)
A spectacular finish, we made Zambia News TV as we cycled through Livingstone and straight on to the bridge at Victoria Falls, where I proceeded to jump off (attached to a bungi rope of course). A celebratory meal with traditional African dancing awaited and a breathtaking sunset cruise to finish.
Thanks again to everyone who supported me, I couldn't have done it without you. Our group total for the Challenge is now sitting at over £90,000, which will go towards the bicycle ambulance (Zambulance) projects that we saw first hand and other road safety improvement projects across Zambia. As road accidents are the 3rd largest killer next to HIV/Aids and Malaria, it is clear to see that this is has been a worthwhile exercise and that your generous donations really will help save lives.
16/3 - Not long till the big event now. The spring weather will help me to ramp up the training. Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far and to those who still are. Your support and contributions have been more than I could have expected and are an encouragement throughout my training.
I've even given up alcohol now until I reach Victoria Falls on the last day. Now that has to be worth a couple of quid!!!
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page. On May 7th 2009 I shall be embarking upon the challenge of a life time and cycling over 450km across Zambia in Southern Africa.
I have not chosen to do this challenge for personal achievement, in fact I can think of nothing worse than the gruelling training in the freezing British climate that I will have to endure for the next few months. I have chosen to do this because I recognise the importance of the work that Transaid is doing in Africa and I admire the way in which they are doing it. Empowering people with driving and transport skills and giving better access to healthcare, education and economic opportunities by improving public transport & road safety.
Working in the Logistics and Transport industry I am aware of the importance that transport plays in our everyday lives. There would be no food on the shelves of our supermarkets and we could not get to work without transport. Luxuries we take for granted on a daily basis.
I would like to think that my contribution, however small it may seem can make a real difference to other less fortunate people.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Transaid gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
So please sponsor me now and help to make a difference.
