At Asthma + Lung UK, our vision is for a world where everyone has healthy lungs. From research and campaigning to advice and support, as the UK’s lung charity we’re on a mission to change the way that lung health is perceived. Because breath is life - and that’s worth fighting for.

Story

Hi everyone,

My Name is
Lynn ; I am 45 and live in Cambridgeshire. 6 years ago I was in a fire, and have now got COPD and recently been diagnosed with Bronchiectasis. I have been on oxygen 24 hours a day since the fire.

(UPDATE:I had a nasal cannular for 6 years but I have just had a scoop fitted, which is a small tube going into my trachea, It works much more effectively as  the oxygen goes directly to my lungs, and it is also less obvious. I love it.)

I have done a few sponsored walks locally but decided that I wanted to not only raise more money, but also raise the profile of Lung disease. So I have decided to do The London Marathon . "You must be mad!" I hear you thinking. well you might be right, but I will not be running the Marathon, I will be walking it in 5 days with a nurse to accompany me, and a small trolley to carry my oxygen in.
I am quite a confident person, although when I first got put on oxygen I thought my life was over, not being able to breathe is the most terrifying experience anyone should have to go through. It affects any age, from a small baby to a grown adult. I know from experience how it feels. I was very frightened that I didn’t have a future. I was assessed for a lung transplant which thankfully I do not need at this time, but will do if my condition deteriorates.

I joined a support group of which I am now Chairperson, that gave me the confidence to fight my disease, and made me realise that I am one of the lucky ones. This is why I have decided to help people who are not as lucky as me! Lung disease is one of the biggest killers in the UK , there are 43 different Lung diseases, and money is desperately needed for research!!! So I would be so grateful if you would sponsor me.

People take being able to breathe for granted, until they have seen a close friend or relative struggle to get their next breath!  So help me to raise as much as I can to help The British Lung Foundation.

I know times are hard, but it is even more hard for people that cannot breathe. Please give as much as you can. even an extra £ will go a long way to help people with lung disease. We all need our lungs to live, so lets help people live longer!!!

 Thank you so much

The 27th April 2006 will be a day that I will never forget as long as I live. It was a very emotional day, but one of the best of my life!!!

I managed to complete the marathon, but with all the support that I had I always knew I would. Thank you to each and every one of you for all the support, hard work and encouragement that you gave me when times got bad! I couldn't have done it with out you. Please keep sponsoring me. Every pound will go to help stop a person suffering with Lung disease. I have reached above my target, but I know it could be a lot more. Bless each and everyone of you.

Thank you
