Who would be mad enough to swim in the English Channel, Lake Geneva AND the Med all in one day? Some young foolish adventurers, you cry? No - we would, that's who!! Two siblings in their fifties!
My (somewhat younger!) brother Chris Cooper is taking his beloved Triumph Tiger 1050 motorbike on 19th June 2010 from France, via Switzerland to Italy and I seem to have agreed to go with him as pillion passenger for the trip. For the record, I really hate cold water and I have only had one trial run on the back of a motorbike ever so I am not sure about that either (although I do now have a rather snazzy biker jacket!). After a freezing swim in the Channel at 5am (sunrise), then Lake Geneva, we get aim to get to Varazze in Italy around 8pm (where I hope the water will be warmer and I will be allowed a cool beer). That is over 700 miles which I had not thought would be possible in one day on the back of a bike, just vaguely hanging on (unless a bit mad and oblivious of the scary bits).
My more sensible side is doing this to support a little known charity trying to provide a mother and baby unit in the Cameroon where the community there needs every help possible. Much assistance is provided by amazing volunteer doctors, some of whom I know, so I realise that funds to keep this project alive are essential. Please take a moment to check out this charity's website-the Cameroon project in particular.
I would not be able to do any of this without my brother Chris and he has chosen his own charity and has his own justgiving page. I hope this will make you think you can support one or other of us- or even both!
