Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre Oxford

At present Maggie’s has an interim facility within a portacabin based at the Churchill Hospital, Headington, Oxford – receiving over 5000 enquires a year.  At the request of the local NHS Trust, Maggie’s are raising funds to build a permanent centre, which will be opposite the new Cancer Treatment Centre (one of the largest in Europe) at the Churchill Hospital. Maggie’s Oxford is scheduled to be built by 2011, designed by Chris Wilkinson and Jim Eyre of Wilkinson Eyre Architects.  A realistic £3 million target has been set for the project.(£1.9 million for the build & £1.1 million two years on going running costs) We are hoping to start building in the next two –three months and are just short of £250,000 of our target

What is a Maggie’s Centre?

Maggie's Centre’s were the vision of the designer and landscape architect Maggie Keswick Jencks when she herself was treated for cancer. She recognised the difficulties of accessing information and emotional support, which are so vital to people facing a diagnosis of cancer. She had a vision of beautiful buildings, located on hospital grounds, staffed by cancer professionals, where people could drop in at any time for a cup of tea and get information, support and inspiration to not only cope with cancer, but to live their lives to the full.

Maggie’s programme of support includes relaxation, yoga and art therapy classes; a range of psychological support group’s and one to one sessions run by trained psychologists; a library of information, with cancer support specialists on hand to answer questions; benefits advice from benefits officers, and much more. All of these services are available on a drop in basis, free of charge, to people with cancer and their families, friends and carers.  The support offered is strictly evidence-based and designed to encourage people to find out what they can do to feel more in control and to live in a less stressful, more hopeful way. And all of this is offered – with a cup of tea – in an atmosphere that is determinedly non-institutional.
