UKAMB, The UK Association of Milk Banking, is the reason that we have donor breastmilk banks in the UK. We desperately need more as there are huge gaps across the UK where there is no access to donor breastmilk.
Donor breastmilk is given to premature and sick babies whose mums are not able to produce enough milk for their own babies. Premature babies who are fed breastmilk are far more likely to avoid serious infection, and to survive and become healthy children, than those who are fed formula. Sadly, these tiny, fragile babies will often not be able to suckle directly when they are first born so their mothers need to express milk to give to them. Some mothers are just too ill after a traumatic early birth to be able to express, and others are unable to express enough milk for other reasons. This is when donated breastmilk can be a lifesaver.
Yet the majority of premature babies in the UK do not have access to donated breastmilk when they need it because we do not have enough milk banks.
