Earl Mountbatten Hospice - Walk the Wight · 16 May 2010 ·

Mountbatten is the Isle of Wight's only hospice and is known for innovation across the UK and beyond. We provide expert medical, nursing and domiciliary end of life care and bereavement support to people in their own homes, including care homes, in our Newport building and in the local hospital.

Story

In the last few years, both Aimee's mum and my dad have recovered from cancer. Rather worryingly, several people in our circle of friends were also diagnosed with this or another life-threatning illness, which has made us think how lucky our respective parents were and of those for whom the possibility of a cure comes too late.

After our local Ramblers group got chatting about the upcoming Walk the Wight fundraiser, I persuaded Aimee that 12 km - a cool 8 miles - really wasn't that much and she spontaneously decided to join me. It was not only the prospect of raising money for charity but also the spectacular views of the Isle of Wight that won her over immediately!

Earl Mountbatten Hospice cares for 800 patients a year, not only with cancer but also other life threatneing deseases such as motor-neurone disease, renal failure, congestive heart disease and chronic chest conditions. They have a Day-Care Unit, 16 bed In-Patient ward, Out-Patients Unit and Family Support Team. Even though a small grant is given by the local NHS, they rely on donations for the other £2.2 million per year that they need to give their patients the best quality of life possible in the time that remains to them.

Any amount you can give will help, no matter how small.
