Story

MY GOAL: US $1850 or 1000 UK Pounds

Every US $150 (75 Pounds) sponsors another week of volunteering with Soft Power.

REMEMBER: When you go through these donating pages, you will put the currency in according to Pounds, not Dollars...so remember to figure in the exchange rate!

Hello everyone...

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page!  As I embark on my next journey in Uganda, it is my hope to raise money for the organization with which I will be working on this trip.  Soft Power Education does wonderful work in the villages surrounding "The Source of the Nile" ensuring that schools are properly renovated and refurbished as well as adding some lighter touches to the classrooms to make learning more fun.  The money you donate could go to anything from paint and building supplies to school supplies and after school programs.  No matter how Soft Power uses your donation directly, you can be sure it will be part of improving the lives of children in rural Uganda and making their school experience a more productive and positive one!

SPECIFICS:
There is an increasing trend towards poverty in Uganda. Many children don't have the opportunities we all had, yet, since 2000, dilapidated classrooms in Bwenda Village have been replaced with new brick structures with concrete floors. Today, 120 AIDS orphans and other deserving infants attend a brightly painted brick-built school with a grassy compound and adventure playground. Rainwater collection tanks have been fitted, safe latrines have been built and another new school for a further 120 kids is nearby in Kyabirwa.

This work is all thanks to an organisation called SoftPower Education. This English-registered charity is presently just over halfway through a five-year plan intent on refurbishing all 20 schools in Budondo Sub Country.

Soft Power Education only spends money directly on its building projects, pre-school staff wages and local builders in Uganda. Without the money the work cannot be started, let alone completed. 99% of the work in Uganda is done by unpaid volunteers; so none of your money is wasted on administration costs – it really reaches where it matters – the schools of Uganda.

HOW MONEY IS SPENT:

Roughly every...

$20 raised provides a uniform for a year
$40 6 tons of building sand
$100 a 1,000 litre water catchment tank
$200 will pay three teachers wages at a preschool
$2,000 will refurbish a 2 classroom primary school block.

PLEASE REMEMBER: The UK Pound is about double the US Dollar, so, for example, if you donate 20 pounds that will register as $38 US

Any amount helps more than you could ever imagine!

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me, especially while I am away.  Soft Power Education gets your money faster and, for my UK tax paying friends, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation!

As always, I thank you for your support and generosity as I embark on this next journey...

Much love, Marci
