Margaret's 2009 Sinai Desert Trek...

"I've volunteered for an amazing challenge in October!  I've been accepted to take part in the EMMS Trek 2009, "Trek Sinai"

One part of the challenge is to walk 50-55 miles in 5 days over fairly difficult terrain, muhc of it off-road, through the Sinai peninsula in the footsteps of Moses and the Children of Israel.  It will take all my resources of energy and stamina, but I am inspired to achieve this for a very good cause - all in supoprt of the Embangweni Hospital, a rural hospital in the north of Malawi.

The second part of the challenge begins long before I go to Egypt on 3rd October though!  By taking part in this EMMS International Trek I've committed to raising at least £3000 (hopefully more!) in sponsorship.  I need your help to achieve this in support of the project.  However, I am paying my own expenses in order to do this trek which is part of the sponsorship target.

A bit about the hospital...

Embangweni Hospital is a 130-bed hospital located in the Mzimba district of northern Malawi, close to the Zambian border to the west.  The hospital serves a population of about 100,000 people, with referral cases often coming from as far away as Zambia.  It also operates several remote health centres with plans to expand this service.  Travel throughout the Embangweni region can be difficult, especially during the rainy months, November to April.

In spite of the passage of time and advances in medical science, life for villagers in Malawi is still precarious.  Several projects are being developed, including upgrading of the water supply, the training and housing of staff, malaria control programmes, the provision of health education to counter HIV ... and much more besides.

Improving healthcare for local people will improve their prospects for a better life; and giving them a better chance of life, in turn, gives hope to the country.

I won't be doing this on my own.  I'll be in the company of about 20 others from various parts of the world, and together we aim to gross over £30,000 for the projects.  I'm particularly excited that I will be starting my challenge on Mount Sinai where, according to the Bible, Moses received the Ten Commandments.  This will be very special!

I am so grateful to our Nationa Health Service who, three years ago, were able to supply me with a replacement hip when I needed one.  I believe that the money I hope to raise through this trek for a very needy hospital in a part of the world where healthcare is very difficult to come by, is one small way of demonstrating this gratitude.  I also look forward to the chance of proving to myself that life at seventy can still offer plenty of interesting things to do if one is prepared to take the chance!
