Clipper round the world race; Leg 2, Rio to Cape Town · 20 October 2009

The Sandpiper Trust provides emergency medical equipment for trained medical professionals in remote parts of Scotland. Our aim is to save lives across Scotland; lives which might otherwise have been lost because it’s not always possible for emergency treatment to be administered quickly enough.

Story

In October I will be racing from Rio de Janeiro to Cape Town on the second leg of the Clipper Round the World Race 2009-2010 http://clipperroundtheworld.com. It will be tough going for the most experienced sailors, reaching speeds of 30 knots, pitching and rolling and dipping into the Southern Ocean before we reach our goal. Not for nothing is this known as the 'yee-ha' leg of the race! I am a complete novice and will find the whole experience really hard. But I hope, with your help, to raise at least £3,282 for the Sandpiper Trust, that is, £1 for every gruelling nautical mile we race.

Sandy Dickson was a favourite pupil of mine at Croftinloan School. He drowned in a tragic accident in 2000 when he was only 14. His family set up the Sandpiper Trust with the aim of providing every Doctor and District Nurse in Scotland with a Specialist Medical Backpack to be used in the 'Golden Hour' after an accident, when the right equipment can save lives. £3,000 buys a defibrillator for this backpack.

Sandy would have loved a race like this. I will carry his memory in my heart every mile of the way. I hope that together we can make a meaningful contribution to his Trust.

Thank you so much for your help.
