My story

Thank you for taking the time to visit our "Leukaemia Awareness Walk around the World" page. Maria (17), Jamie (24), Tuesday (21), Samantha (16), Jordan (15), Christopher (19), Keira (7) and Margaret (18) are undertaking a Virtual Walk around the World in an attempt to raise awareness of Leukaemia in Children, Teenagers and Young Adults. The Cancer Candle on the left reminds us of all those lost to Leukaemia and Other Cancers.

No-one has been able to tell us why we got Leukaemia and before this happened none of us really knew much about it.  Together, we are "Walking around the World" to pass on information about the signs and symptoms of this illness.  Please read and pass on this link to everyone in your address book. It could save a life in the future.

So...what should I be looking out for?

- Unexplained weight loss
- Headaches
- Vomiting, at night or early morning
- Increased swelling in the abdomen
- Pain in bones, joints, back, or legs
- Lumps - abdomen, neck, chest, pelvis, armpits
- Excessive unexplained bruising
- Bleeding - Nose/Gums/Heavy Periods
- Rash
- Constant infections
- Nausea which persists or vomiting without nausea
- Constant tiredness
- Noticeable pale complexion
- Eye or vision changes which occur suddenly and persist
- Fevers that come and go without explanation
- General feeling of being unwell

Whilst doing this "virtual walk" we are also raising funds for:-

1) Research into the causes of Leukaemia in children, teenagers and young adults and
2) Genetic Research to Reduce Deaths and Suffering Caused by Overwhelming Infection as part of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine.

We are joined on this walk by our friends:-

Alex - Aged 27;  Ben - Aged 6; Karl - Aged 2; Becky - Aged 18; Jack - Aged 17; Ellie - Aged 3 and Kathryn - Aged 18

The reason we are raising funds for Project 1 is that none of us know why we got this illness and if we can find out then maybe we can stop it in the future.  The reason we are raising funds for Project 2 is that Maria, Tuesday, Samantha, Jordan, Christopher, Kiera and Margaret have all died as a result of overwhelming infection. Jamie died as a result of bleeds caused by the Leukaemia.  We dont want the same to happen to Alex, Ben, Karl, Becky, Jack, Ellie and Kathryn.  We want to try and do our part in not only raising awareness of an illness that kills more children, teenagers and young adults than any other illness but also help in fighting towards better outcomes for others in the future.

We therefore ask that you sponsor us £2.00 and leave us a message of support and also let us know what part of the world you are supporting us from. If you are UK Resident please Giftaid your gift - if you are a non UK tax payer or live outside the UK you can still sponsor us - just dont tick the Giftaid box.

To further support our cause, we also ask, if you live in the UK that you spare a couple of seconds to copy and paste our online petition into your internet browser and sign

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/leukaemia (copy and paste into your browser)

Non-UK Residents can also support by signing the support petition at http://petitionthem.com/default.asp?sect=detail&pet=4349 (copy and paste)

to try and get Government to address the issue of Leukaemia as a matter of urgency.  If you are resident in another country other than the UK please sign our International Supplementary Support petition.

Too many young lives are being lost to this illness - its needs to stop now!

Please pass on to everyone you know and help us to make this a worldwide awareness campaign.

With our love and thanks

Cancer is the most common cause of non-accidental death in teens and young adults.

1 in 330 boys and 1 in 420 girls will contract cancer before their 20th birthday.

By the age of 15 you have a 1 in 600 chance of developing cancer.  By the age of 24 you will have a 1 in 285 chance of developing cancer.

In the last 30 years, the incidence of cancer in the teenage and young adult group has increased by 50% and for the first time ever, the number of teens with cancer now exceeds the number of children with cancer.

This page has been set up to specifically support research projects. Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: The Charity gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Thank you for your support!
