Story

Hello and welcome to my fund raising page for my walk from London to York. I am raising money for the Folkestone Winter Shelter which exists to give the homeless of Folkestone a place to keep warm, find help with finding a new home and indeed to have people to talk to and who care about them and will listen to what they say.

The budget for this winter is near enough fulfilled but I am starting early for next winters budget so that the shelter does not find itself in such a funding shortfall as it did this winter.

Anyway, about my walk.

I will be walking from London (Westminster) to the centre of York and averaging about 25 miles a day. At night I will be camping out and on some nights I will be staying at guest houses but I will just make it up as I go along to a large extent. The walk goes across the historic 'Great Towpath' route and totals 304 miles and passes through many market towns and a few cities.

My original route was going to be from Folkestone to York using certain A roads in a direct manner totalling 275 miles but this would have been far more unpleasant than this newer route that I have found.

I have now found a book which details that historic canal route from westminster to York and guides the walker through what they need to know about the route and the sites within it. Despite being 30 miles further than the original Folkestone route it seems like a far more suitable route for lone walking and camping.

I am aiming at the walking taking about 12 days but I may need a day in the middle to organise myself and rest my legs so am allowing 13-14 days in total.
