On December 28, Mark Sanders, Steve Whitehead, Craig White and our trusty / rusty 25 year old Land Rover, set off in an attempt to complete The 2007 Plymouth Banjul Challenge. Well, I’m delighted to say that we did it!

It certainly was a challenge. Here is a list of highlights / lowlights in no particular order:-

  • Alternator failure, 2 punctures, fuel injector blockages, throttle cable problems, numerous oil leaks, rear door metal work torn during a sand storm in the Sahara, not to mention that we discovered that it was only 2WD due to broken rear half shaft!

  • Salmonella food poisoning.

  • Driving challenge of towing a VW Scirocco through Marrakech rush hour!

  • Over 4,000 miles covered on some very interesting road surfaces! One Challenger in front of us, wrote his car off when he hit a 3ft deep pot hole!

  • 5 lengthly border crossings not to mention innumerable police control points. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to sharpen their negotiation skills not to mention their patience!

Our Land Rover was auctioned on Sunday 28 January in Banjul by the organisers to raise money for Gambian charities. We covered all expenses ourselves, so any donations you made, went straight to Cancer Research.  If you haven’t had chance yet, please dig deep and sponsor us online.

Remember, that donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Cancer Research will receive your money faster and, if you are a taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

 Many thanks for your support.

 Mark, Steve and Craig.
