After 20 years of being a smoker I have finally stopped and in doing so I have set myself the challenge of running the London Marathon on 13th April 2008. This is also a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for a charity that has touched everyone in our community. I will be running as part of the Muscular Dystrophy team. My son Theo goes to nursery with Joey Levene. They act and play like any other 2year old child does. However Joey suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This is a very serious condition. Most affected boys develop the first signs of difficulty in walking between the ages of one and three. They are usually unable to run or jump like their peers, often struggle to climb stairs and need to use a banister for support. Rising from the floor can also prove difficult.
As the condition progresses, boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy are unable to walk as far or as fast as other children and may occasionally fall down.
Between the ages of 8 and 11 boys become unable to walk and by their late teens or twenties the condition is severe enough to shorten life expectancy. The need to help raise funds to find a cure is crucial. I am aiming to raise £4000.00 to help not just Joey but the 100 boys a year who are born with this condition. At this moment in time I will have to one day sit down with Theo and explain to him what is wrong with Joey. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we as parents didn’t have to do that. With your help maybe we won’t have too. Please give generously Kind Regards Yours Sincerely Mark
