The challenge: To climb and travel between the tallest mountains of England, Scotland and Wales within a 24 hour period.
Scafell Pike in England – 978m
Ben Nevis in Scotland – 1344m
Snowdon in Wales – 1085m
The overall distance to be walked is 25 miles; the height to be climbed is around 10,000 feet. The distance to be covered between mountains is roughly 450 miles. The time we are hoping to complete all of this in is just 24 hours.
The Reason: Sadly on 22 November 2009 we all lost a very good friend, Mark Elkington, who died in a road accident. Mark had himself planned to take part in the 3 peaks Challenge this year, so we have decided to undertake the challenge in his memory and hopefully make him proud.
The Cause: We are raising money for Kidscape, a Charity who work to prevent bullying and protect children. We have chosen an anti bullying charity as Mark felt very strongly about this cause, as a teacher he would not tolerate bullying of any form and worked hard to stamp it out within his school. By raising money for Kidscape we hope to help prevent bullying within schools all over the UK.
Kidscape is a registered Charity, Charity No. 326864. For more information on the work they do please visit http://www.kidscape.org.uk/
The Event: All going to plan the challenge will begin on Saturday 19 June 2010. The clock starts when the climbers set foot on the base of Ben Nevis and will be stopped when the reach the base of Snowden, all being well less than 24 hours later
The Team: Climbing the Mountains – Andy Bowles, John Furborough, Jonny Plews and Steve Dean.
Driving and Support Team – TBC (Applications Welcome!!!)
