New Forest Triathlon · 15 April 2008

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

The Short Fat Bloke Faces His Darkest Fears!

Some of you may know that I have a long career of running races (albeit slowly!).  Sadly over the last year I’ve had a lot less time to go running and not only because of work.

Mainly it was due to the diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s in my mum and the need to sort out all that entails like care homes, power of attorney and a million other things. Not helped by the fact she lived in London.

As part of this I came into contact with the Alzheimer’s Society and found out what a great job they do supporting people with the condition as well as their family and carers.  Personally I found their support invaluable as I knew nothing about Alzheimer’s or its implications.

I wanted to help the Alzheimer’s Society and I needed a new physical challenge.  Taking my cue from my buddy Andy Bentley I decided that a triathlon was the thing I needed!

So on 29th June I’ll be participating in the New Forest Triathlon where I will be:
• Swimming 750m in the Beaulieu river (until January I’d not even got my 10 yard swimming certificate).
• Cycling 25km on the roads of the New Forest (without the two little wheels beside the big one at the back that I usually use)
• Running 6km (now this bit I can handle but I don’t usually have the extended warm-up described above)

This is taking a lot of training effort from me and I’m sure you would love to help.  Here are your choices:
• to help from the comfort of your PC by making a donation through my Just Giving Website at www….
• If you would like more pain you can also join us on one of Andy’s 40km training cycles over the Wiltshire Hills.

Feel free to contact me anydiscuss the latest in wetsuit fashion, cycling cadences or the joys of tight lycra!
