Some of you will recognise Mr Lau Snr, a photo from back in 1998.  He died of an aggressive pancreatic cancer about 7 months later.  He would have been 67 on the 18 of this month.

So when a friend ventured last week that “we should do a no-training half marathon in Reading for charity”, I looked at the charity list, saw Pancreatic Cancer UK, requested (and got) a charity place, and thought it was fate at work.  Since then, I’ve learned that the friend was “confused” and hadn’t entered the race at all.  So thanks, Paul.

Therefore, on Sunday 29 March, I will attempt my first half marathon with but an iPod for company.  So far, so not-all-that-impressive, I hear you cry.  But I raise you a “no training” warranty (my employer has generously provided me with the work of 4 people to help me ensure this).  In addition (and further in the spirit of the Victorian “training is cheating” mentality), and if the Government so wills it by quantitively easing me to the tune of no less than GBP150 Bn, I will run it in a suit, shirt, tie and perhaps even a smart pair of wing-tips.  (Yes I’ll provide photo evidence.) [13-March-09: after medical advice, I understand that running in work shoes is even more stupid than, say, running without training in a suit.]

Finally, thanks for reading.  Even if you don’t or can’t leave a donation, I hope some of what you’ve read will inspire you to go out and do the things you dream about now. Don't leave it for 7 months’ time*.

Thanks

Oh, by the way, Justigiving says: “Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Pancreatic Cancer UK gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.”
