Our hospitals serve 900,000 local people. Whilst the NHS provides funding for the necessities, King George & Queen’s Hospitals Charity funds projects which enhance the hospital experience for patients, visitors and staff at both Queen’s Hospital, Romford and King George Hospital, Ilford.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. As most of you know, on September 27th 2011 mine and my family's lives fell apart- my brother Martin had a motorbike accident soon after passing his test and was rushed to hospital in an unstable critical condition. Because of his extensive head injuries he was transferred straight to Romford Queens hospital where he spent the following week and a half in a coma being kept alive by machines. We sat and held his hand as we watched him lay still with wires up his nose, down his throat and drainage tubes from his punctured lungs and torn-open leg. We were told there was a really high chance he wouldn't pull through and that if by some miracle he did, that he would probably be brain dead and hooked up to machines for the rest of his life. The technology alone that saved him cost the NHS in excess of £5000 per day, plus he had 3 staff per shift with him at all times. Gradually he started to come round, first moving his leg and gradually an eye until after another week he was conscious but unable to move his right side or speak for quite some time.

Luckily my brother made it and we would all love to give something back to the unit that saved him, which are responsible for all Neuro ITU treatment, so if anyone you know and love has or has had brain injuries, brain tumours or a stroke the chances are that this is the department that will treat them. Martin is now slowly getting better in hospital, although we won't know for quite some time if he will fully recover both mentally and physically from this awful accident. The dark, devastating, desperate time we went through at the hospital is something I never want to experience again so if we can even help to ease another family's suffering then every fundraising effort we make will be worthwhile.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
