On 29th August 2009, two intrepid travellers will launch their canoes at the start of the navigable section of the River Great Ouse. From here (Oakley, near Bedford) they will negotiate their way downstream to the cathedral city of Ely, approximately 85 miles away.
This adventure will take Big Matt and Little Matt around 5 days, taking in treacherous waters (sort of) and many different pubs along the way. But this is not just some jolly boat trip, the boys are raising money for ASSERT - The Angelman Syndrome Support, Education and Reseach Trust. This amazing charity supports a dedicated network of parents, carers and medical professionals who care for children suffering from Angelman Syndrome.
You may not have heard of Angelman Syndrome - it's a rare genetic or neurological condition caused by a missing chromosome. A person diagnosed with the contidion typically exhibits global developmental delay, feeding problems, unusual jerky limb movements, poor sleep patterns and profound severe learning and speech difficulties. It affects not just the children but the lives of the parents and carers who look after them.
Please support the two Matts in this gruelling challenge, it's for a truly worthy cause.
