Community Hospice provides free end of life care to anyone living with a terminal illness in Greenwich and Bexley, supporting around 3,000 people each year. Our goal is to help everyone we care for to approach death in the way that suits their values, beliefs and lifestyle.

Story

Let us introduce you to a bright, talented and adventurous young man. His name is Matthew King and he contacted the Hospice about a year ago to say his aim is to climb to the top of the highest mountain in each of the seven continents.  With the inspiration of grandfather Dennis Broyd who died of cancer before he was born, Matthew has found raising money to fund the expeditions and raise sponsorship for the Hospice, let alone the extensive training, an exhausting experience.

To gain support he has sent out reams of letters, given speeches to influential people, businesses and local newspapers and attended Hospice events.

Last August, he completed his first climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the largest mountain in Africa and raised £2,342.13 for the Hospice funds - "one down, six to go" as Matthew says!

Howard King, Fundraising Manager says, "Matthew's climb showed great resolve and to climb to an altitude of 19,350 ft is a magnificent achievement for anyone let alone such a young man. We are very grateful to Matthew and his family for their support and look forward to his next challenge, which is Aconcagua in December 2007."

Aconcagua is located in South America in the Andes, situated near the Argentinian/Chilean border, and is 22,841 feet high; known as the 'stone sentinel' it is not only the highest peak of the Andes but is the highest point outside of Asia.  Apparently the extreme cold, stormy winds and altitude make this mountain a serious undertaking.

Matthew is hugely grateful (and so are we) to everyone who has already given so generously but he is continually seeking further support to fulfil his dream.

A remarkable young man, we're sure you would agree and did we mention, Matthew is only 16!

If you would like to help Matthew reach his goal please donate
through this site, which is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor Matthew: Greenwich & Bexley Cottage Hospice will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.
