The Salvation Army is a registered charity and church working in 120 countries worldwide and is one of the largest and most diverse providers of social welfare in the world. In the UK and Republic of Ireland this work includes more than 800 Salvation Army social service centres and community churches. We provide unconditional friendship, support and very practical help to people in crisis and need and work with children, older people, homeless people and those dealing with drug and/or alcohol addiction. Alongside our work in the UK, The Salvation Army International Development (UK) is part of a world-wide team supporting the battle against poverty in developing countries. The projects we work with are designed by the poor for the poor and we are about enabling and empowering people to build a better future for themselves.

I'm running the London Marathon on 26th April, 2009, in aid of Salvation Army Chikankata Health Services, Zambia.

Chikankata serves 85,000 people in rural Zambia. The hospital trains Zambian nurses, has 9 wards, including a children's ward, operating theatre, and biomedical science lab. It provides 2000 people with free Anti Retro Viral drugs, runs Child Support programmes in communities for orphans and vulnerable children, sinks boreholes for clean water, and runs 6 outreach health centres in rural areas.

The HIV rate in the region is 1 in 4 people. In 2007 the biggest killers of children were malaria, malnourishment, pneumonia, and diarrhoea. All are preventable.

If you would like to sponsor me, that would be wonderful. I have included below a guide to the value of your gift; please do note that any money given will be used as needed by Chikankata.

£2 - Kids meals for a day; £8 - Mosquito net; £10 - Clean water for a family for life; £10 - a month's supply of Anti-Retro Virals (ARV's) for an HIV positive child; £15 - Goat for an AIDS orphan; £30 - Health check up and treatment; £40 - Birthing kit; £170 - a cow; £310 - a family of chickens
