I'm running the London Marathon on 26th April, 2009, in aid of Salvation Army Chikankata Health Services, Zambia.
Chikankata serves 85,000 people in rural Zambia. The hospital trains Zambian nurses, has 9 wards, including a children's ward, operating theatre, and biomedical science lab. It provides 2000 people with free Anti Retro Viral drugs, runs Child Support programmes in communities for orphans and vulnerable children, sinks boreholes for clean water, and runs 6 outreach health centres in rural areas.
The HIV rate in the region is 1 in 4 people. In 2007 the biggest killers of children were malaria, malnourishment, pneumonia, and diarrhoea. All are preventable.
