Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My name is Matt and I am a fire fighter serving with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service at Birchwood Fire Station. I started running and raising money for charity about 5 years after a tragedy in the family motivated me in to action. I decided I wanted to support a charity and help other people to get through whatever life may throw at them. Since then I have raised money for various charities but this year I will be running the London Marathon in aid of Hestia's Age Activity Centre.
Through other family members' work with older people and my own experience in the community as a fire fighter I have seen how older members of society can feel vulnerable and isolated. The Age Activity Centre provides a friendly environment where older people can develop friendships and take part in interesting activities that help them to maximise their talents and remain happy and independent. Based in Tooting, the centre helps over 160 people aged 60 and over to stay active, healthy and independent by giving them a place where they can get involved with a variety of clubs and classes from Keep Fit to Tai Chi and from Computer Classes to the Gospel Choir, all tailored to the needs and interests of the centre's users.
I have set myself the fund raising target of £1000, which is roughly the amount of money it costs to fuel one of the centre's minibuses for a whole year. Centres such as this are kept running by the generosity of supporters and volunteers and as I for one am not getting any younger I thought I should get the ball rolling. So, as it is such a worthy cause and in honour of Hestia's 40th anniversary of empowering vulnerable people in London I have made the first donation on this site. Please dig deep and donate whatever you can afford.
Many thanks for your support,
Matt
